Civil Liberties in Peril

being law school gets me thinking about how scary some of the recent laws and restrictions on freedoms are. I don't feel like ranting and would rather be lazy and just link to an article that I think captures things well. I can't wait to get a law license and start challenging some of this stuff

Ghana Photo Project

This seems like a cool idea despite the fact that her premise (to improve upon the perception westerners have of Africa)goes unfulfilled. Enjoy.

Check out this Cayucous...

As Middleman requested, here are some pictures of Josh and Marta's wedding.
Read On!
The wedding was this past weekend in Cayucous, CA (for those of you wondering, if means little Kayak. Dirty, we know). The whole weekend was, of course, way too much fun, and us RPCV's that were there exhibited our usual unacceptable behavior. I will have to say that my favorite part was at the reception when the bridal party was being introduced to the song APUSKELEKE!!! It was brilliant, simply brilliant. It was every little Apus's dream.

Brendan enjoyed the quality time with our fellow RPCV's so much that when we returned home to Denver, he encouraged us to have another PC reunion so he could be apart of it. This time how about we go to Utah to visit Scott and Julie? We'll sit out on their porch and make fun of all their crazy neighbors. Oh, wait, that means we would have to bring our own beer. Never mind that idea.

By the way obrunis....sorry, but my camera's battery failed me in the middle of the wedding, so I only have a few pics. also, i tried to get all of the pictures the same size, but this damn high-tech blog thing is way past my ability. sorry-o.

John Cougar Mellancamp: Chevy's Minister of Propaganda

I'm not sure how many of you out there have seen the new Chevrolet commercial featuring one of America's leading patriots, John Mellancamp. If you haven't, well, you're not a true American...that's all there is to it. In the commercial Mellancamp subtly reminds us of what it is to be an American, notably that we are a people who will "stand and fight." To help Mr. Mellancamp convey this message the ad-wizards that came up with this fine piece of propaganda, which is worthy of a World War II newsreel, spliced together two kinds of images. The first are of famous American's "standing and fighting," and the second are of various national tragedies such as the Vietnam war, Hurricane Katrina and 9/11.

The commercial implies that we are a country that works together and is united against tragedy. Nevermind the fact that the images of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, meant to remind us of the great civil rights movement that was (because we are all equal now), represented a time of great divisiveness, not unity, in the United States. I suppose we could give Chevy the benefit of the doubt and agree to interpret this commercial's message as: "These are the many faces of our country." However, doing so would require us to ignore a) that such an innocuous statement ignores not only the truth, but the complexity of this country and (b), perhaps more importantly, that this car company would engage in something so shameless as to juxtapose its product with some of our most important historical moments; our greatest achievements and most colossal failures.

To see the commercial click "Read More" Note: ignore the writing accross the screen, don't know what that's about..got this off youtube.com

Yeah Marriage

Though I haven't yet seen any photographs, I think it is safe to assume that Marta and Josh's wedding was a beautiful affair. I just wanted to take a moment to congratulate them and wish them good luck and good health. Mazel, Mazel...good things. I hope you post a few pics on the Bblog for us all to enjoy.

And while we are on the subject of marriage, I am looking forward to this weekend with great anticipation. No, no Joselyn and I are not flying to Vegas on a whim, rather we are flying to Tahoe to witness the holy matrimony between Mairead Schwab (soon to be Armitage?) and Ben Armitage. Ben, Scott and I will be resplendent in our Blackwatch Tartan Kilts...that's right Kilts! The best part of the whole affair is: I get to wear a knife...yes!!!!!!!!

Congratulations all around. Here's to the brides and grooms.

Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray, Hip Hip Hooray!
